Coriander, also popularly called Dhania, are little round seeds that are finely grounded to make a powder. Similarly, Cumin or Jeera is a tiny oblong, brown seed widely used in both whole and powdered form. The mixture of the two powders is very frequently used into Indian dishes.

1. Is coriander powder and cumin powder the same?

Coriander and cumin are different seeds with their distinct flavors and aroma. Cumin is an oblong brown seed, typically as long as a rice grain. Whereas, coriander is a little round seed with a woody appearance.

2. Can you substitute cumin powder with coriander powder?

Since both have a different flavor and aroma, using one instead of the other can make a difference. You may not get the desired taste and flavor if you replace one of these spices with the other.

3. How can I distinguish between cumin powder and coriander Powder?

Cumin and coriander in the powdered form can look very similar. However, you can distinguish between the two by its color. Cumin will be slightly darker than coriander. You can also locate the difference in their respective aroma.

4. Can I use whole seeds of cumin and coriander instead of powder?

Surely you can do that. However,  powdered Cumin and coriander adds more flavor. Whole spices are ideally suited for tempering while grounded ones add to the consistency and the unique flavor.
